GARDEN HISTORY

Purchasing the property in 1978

We purchased our 24 acres at One Tree Hill in 1978.  Geoff was the motivator behind this move because he wanted a few acres so that he could have a vegetable garden and plant some fruit trees.  Small lots were very difficult to find and we ended up with more land than we originally planned.  We built our house and by April 1980 had moved in.

Initially we weren't particularly interested in gardening and just planted natives everywhere, mainly eucalypts, acacias and melaleucas, with the odd grevillea and correa thrown in.  Fifteen years down the track, the acacias and melaleucas had either spread uncontrollably or split, and they looked particularly unattractive.

By this time we had started dabbling in gardening.  As we started to remove the acacias, we found that the very large exposed areas of ground created a perfect environment for a new garden, particularly as there was an abundance of accumulated leaf mulch.  One by one these areas were created -  no formal planning, just a gradual evolution which is still going on.
